Category: VLAN Management

Description: Manages VLAN configuration and membership on 3Com SMA-series switch modules.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is A3COM0074-SMA-VLAN-SUPPORT?

This is a 3Com enterprise MIB written for the SMA-series switch modules, part of 3Com's LAN switching product line from the SuperStack/CoreBuilder era. It exposes VLAN configuration objects covering VLAN creation, private-VLAN-to-interface mapping, and per-port VLAN membership assignment. Although primarily a configuration MIB, it lets administrators confirm the operational consistency of VLAN membership and per-interface VLAN association, which indirectly reflects the switch's configuration and software health. It is intended to be used alongside standard bridging/VLAN MIBs such as Q-BRIDGE-MIB, on top of the 3Com enterprise MIB tree, rather than as a standalone module. It is typically deployed on legacy 3Com SMA/SuperStack switches in enterprise wiring closets to audit and manage VLAN segmentation. Engineers can download the A3COM0074-SMA-VLAN-SUPPORT file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0074-SMA-VLAN-SUPPORT. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com SMA-series switch module
  • 3Com SuperStack/CoreBuilder LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll a3ComVlanPrivateIfTable/a3ComVlanPrivateIfEntry to see which private VLAN each interface belongs to, and check a3ComVlanMembers to confirm the full list of ports assigned to a given VLAN. If a3ComVlanCreateType shows an unexpected static-versus-dynamic setting, or a3ComVlanMembers is missing a port that should belong to a VLAN, that reveals a misconfiguration causing connectivity loss for devices on that segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VLAN membership per interface
  • private VLAN to interface mapping
  • VLAN creation type (static/dynamic)
  • VLAN port assignment list
