Color marking, as in a two- or three-color policer, tells downstream queuing whether a packet is within, exceeding, or well over its committed rate, directly affecting whether it's dropped preferentially under congestion. For example, an admin seeing zMlsQosModeColor report red(3) for traffic on a given interface would know that traffic is marked out-of-profile and first in line to be dropped if congestion occurs.
