Category: VLAN and Layer 2 Switching
Description: Defines IETF virtual bridge port and VLAN membership management for 802.1Q-aware switches.

What Is V-BRIDGE-MIB?
V-BRIDGE-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF extension to the standard Bridge MIB that implements IEEE 802.1v, which defines VLAN classification by protocol and port for 802.1Q-aware switches. It exposes configuration data describing how untagged frames are mapped to VLANs based on protocol type (e.g., IP, IPX) combined with the ingress port, via protocol group and protocol-port group tables. As a configuration-oriented module it is primarily used to monitor and audit VLAN classification policy rather than hardware health, letting an administrator confirm which protocol-to-VLAN mappings are active on each port and detect misconfigurations that misclassify traffic into the wrong VLAN. It depends on and extends the base IETF BRIDGE-MIB and the dot1dBase port model, and is meant to be implemented alongside standard 802.1Q VLAN MIBs. It is typically deployed on enterprise Ethernet switches that support protocol-based VLAN assignment in mixed-protocol network segments, and administrators consult the V-BRIDGE-MIB reference when auditing these bindings.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in V-BRIDGE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- 802.1Q-aware Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would inspect dot1vProtocolGroupTable (dot1vProtocolGroupEntry) to see which dot1vProtocolTemplateFrameType/dot1vProtocolTemplateProtocolValue pairs are bound to a given dot1vProtocolGroupId, then cross-reference dot1vProtocolPortTable (dot1vProtocolPortEntry) to find which dot1vProtocolPortGroupVid a port's dot1vProtocolPortGroupId resolves to. If traffic from a legacy protocol unexpectedly lands in the wrong VLAN, comparing the expected group VID against dot1vProtocolPortGroupVid on the ingress port would reveal a misconfigured protocol-VLAN binding.
What Can Be Monitored
- protocol-to-VLAN group mappings
- frame type and protocol value templates
- per-port protocol group VLAN ID assignments
- protocol group identifiers
