bootpServerName

Module: TIGER

OID (symbolic): TIGER::bootpServerName

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.1978.2.1.8.2.1.2

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: OCTET STRING

Access: read-write

Description: An optional string signifying the name of the server that should respond to the BOOTP request. If bcastServerName contains a string, only the server that matches that name/address will answer the request. If bcastServerName is an empty string, then any BOOTP server that received the request may answer.

This entry is only required for the first entry of the bootp table since subsequent bootp table entries are only used to perform FTP operations. Any subsequent FTP transactions will be performed to the 'server IP' address that was found in the bootp response.

What is bootpServerName?

This read-write string optionally restricts which BOOTP server may answer this request: if set, only a server matching this name or address will respond, and if left empty, any BOOTP server may answer. It is only meaningful on the first entry of the BOOTP table, since later entries in the table are used purely for FTP follow-up actions against the server IP returned in the BOOTP response. Admins set it when they need to ensure a boot request is answered only by a specific, trusted server.
