This Counter32, keyed by the ATM link index, counts misinserted cells — ATM cells that arrive on this link but belong to a different virtual path/channel than expected, a standard ITU-T ATM performance parameter — with the source DESCRIPTION left blank so the meaning follows the standard ATM cell misinsertion metric implied by the object name. Admins use this counter as a data-integrity indicator, since misinserted cells can corrupt the payload of the VC they land in. For example, a nonzero and growing misinserted-cell count on a link would prompt an admin to investigate cross-connect or switching-fabric misconfiguration upstream.
