This object carries the OID of whatever managed object just had a status change, and it's included as the first variable binding in a statusChangeTrap notification from Sun Management Center. A management console reading a statusChangeTrap uses this value to know precisely which object's status changed, without having to guess from the trap alone. For example, statusOID might carry the OID of a disk-health object, telling the receiving NMS that a specific disk's status field is what triggered the trap.
