coldStart

Module: SNMPv2-MIB

OID (symbolic): SNMPv2-MIB::coldStart

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.6.3.1.1.5.1

Node type: NOTIFICATION-TYPE

Description:

A coldStart trap signifies that the SNMP entity, supporting a notification originator application, is reinitializing itself and that its configuration may have been altered.

What is coldStart?

This is a standard SNMP notification sent by an agent when the system completes a full restart or cold boot, signaling that its runtime configuration may have changed. Unlike a warm start, a cold start indicates that the device lost state and reinitializes from scratch. Network monitoring systems listen for this trap to invalidate cached state, resync configuration, and trigger alerts for unplanned device restarts.

Examples

Send this trap to an SNMP manager — replace <manager> with the IP or hostname of your monitoring server (SNMPv2c):

snmptrap -v2c -c public <manager> '' SNMPv2-MIB::coldStart
snmptrap -v2c -c public <manager> '' 1.3.6.1.6.3.1.1.5.1

Listen for incoming traps on the manager host (-f keeps it in the foreground, -Lo prints to stdout — useful for testing):

snmptrapd -f -Lo -c /dev/null authCommunity log public

Example snmptrapd log entry:
