Category: Vendor MIB Infrastructure

Description: Defines common textual conventions shared across MRV Communications OS-based network device MIB modules.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is OS-COMMON-TC-MIB?

OS-COMMON-TC-MIB is a support module published by ADVA Optical Networking (for equipment originally from MRV Communications) that defines shared textual conventions used across the vendor's OS-series and NB-series optical/switching device MIB modules. Rather than exposing its own monitorable objects, it establishes common data types, enumerations, and formatting conventions that other device-specific MIBs reference for consistency. Its practical monitoring role is indirect: by standardizing conventions, it underpins how hardware and software status such as switch states, port modes, and inventory attributes are represented consistently across the related nbase, oaccess, and oaOptiSwitch MIB families. It is explicitly a dependency for other MRV/ADVA MIB modules, so it must be loaded alongside them for those modules to compile and parse correctly. It is deployed wherever ADVA/MRV optical switching or network base (nbase) platforms are managed, as a prerequisite MIB rather than a standalone monitoring target. Engineers can download the OS-COMMON-TC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in OS-COMMON-TC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ADVA Optical Networking switching platforms
  • MRV Communications OS-based network devices

Monitoring Examples

This module is a textual-convention/support MIB rather than one exposing runtime data objects of its own; its identifiers such as nbase, oaccess, and nbSwitchG1 establish naming and typing conventions consumed by other ADVA/MRV MIBs. There is no realistic standalone polling scenario for this module — administrators instead monitor the device-specific MIBs (e.g., nbSwitchG1-based modules) that import these conventions.
