What Is OPENBSD-BASE-MIB?
OPENBSD-BASE-MIB is the base SNMP MIB module shipped with OpenBSD's native snmpd agent, providing system- and OS-level management objects for the open-source OpenBSD operating system rather than any single hardware vendor. It groups objects into subtrees for the pf packet filter (pfMIBObjects), hardware sensor data (sensorsMIBObjects), memory usage (memMIBObjects), CARP redundancy protocol state (carpMIBObjects), and general local system identification (localSystem). Its principal monitoring role is hardware and OS health visibility: sensorsMIBObjects exposes temperature, fan, and voltage sensor readings, memMIBObjects reports real/swap memory utilization, and carpMIBObjects reports failover role and state for high-availability firewall pairs. It is a self-contained OpenBSD-specific module that complements, but does not replace, standard MIBs like SNMPv2-MIB and IF-MIB for generic system/interface data. It is typically deployed on OpenBSD-based firewalls, routers, and general-purpose servers where operators monitor OS resource usage, hardware sensors, and CARP high-availability status. Operators setting up monitoring for the first time typically need an OPENBSD-BASE-MIB download from the OpenBSD source tree or a public MIB repository before their NMS can decode these objects.

An administrator would poll memMIBObjects to check real memory and swap utilization and catch memory pressure before it affects packet forwarding, and sensorsMIBObjects to read hardware sensor values (e.g., CPU or chassis temperature, fan RPM) to detect a cooling failure. carpMIBObjects would be polled on a firewall pair to confirm which node currently holds the CARP master role, with an unexpected role flip indicating a failover event. pfMIBObjects exposes pf firewall counters useful for spotting state-table exhaustion or rule-match anomalies.
