ipSystemStatsInDiscards

Module: IP-MIB

OID (symbolic): IP-MIB::ipSystemStatsInDiscards

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.31.1.1.17

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter32

Access: read-only

Description:

The number of input IP datagrams for which no problems were encountered to prevent their continued processing, but were discarded (e.g., for lack of buffer space). Note that this counter does not include any datagrams discarded while awaiting re-assembly.

Discontinuities in the value of this counter can occur at re-initialization of the management system, and at other times as indicated by the value of ipSystemStatsDiscontinuityTime.

What is ipSystemStatsInDiscards?

This counter tracks the total number of incoming IP datagrams that the system intentionally discarded despite being processable (for example, due to buffer exhaustion). It does not include fragments waiting for reassembly and resets or increments based on system management actions. An operator monitors this counter to detect buffer congestion, memory pressure, or resource allocation problems affecting incoming traffic.
