Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter32

Access: read-only

Description:

The number of packets that have been dropped by this drop process. On high speed devices, this object implements the least significant 32 bits of diffServAlgDropHCPkts.

Discontinuities in the value of this counter can occur at re- initialization of the management system and at other times as indicated by the value of ifCounterDiscontinuityTime appropriate to this interface.

What is diffServAlgDropPkts?

This OID holds a counter of how many data packets have been discarded by a quality-of-service dropping rule. When network congestion occurs, the system deliberately drops lower-priority packets to protect higher-priority traffic. An operator would track this counter to identify when congestion is occurring and whether their quality-of-service policies are working as intended.
