This object holds the primary routing metric for a static route, whose meaning depends on the routing protocol identified by that route's drStaticCidrProto value, and it is set to -1 when the metric isn't used. Admins adjust this to influence route preference when multiple paths to the same destination exist. For example, lowering drStaticCidrMetric1 on a static backup route makes it less preferred than a dynamically learned OSPF route with a better metric, until the primary path fails.
