This INTEGER, hmacMd5 or hmacSha, is described as the Hash algorithm employed by this IKE Policy Entry, used to protect the integrity of phase-1 ISAKMP negotiation messages. An admin picks hmacSha over hmacMd5 for stronger integrity protection when both sides of the negotiation support it, since MD5-based hashing is considered comparatively weak. For example, an admin standardizing phase-1 policy across all site-to-site tunnels might set this to hmacSha to retire an older hmacMd5-based policy.
