cmStateGenericClass is a read-only enumeration classifying a state-table entry at a coarse level -- system, shelf, board, port, link, or support -- showing what kind of resource the entry describes. An administrator uses it to filter the generic state table down to just the resource category they care about, such as isolating all port-level entries when auditing line status. For example, filtering cmStateGenericClass to link(1280) would surface only the DSL link-level entries in this shared state table rather than shelf or board rows.
