Operationally, alignment errors recorded at the CPE end let an admin verify a suspected noise problem is affecting the customer's actual receive path, not just the head-end's view of the line. For example, an admin cross-checking this CPE-side alignment-error count against the head-end's figure for the same hour can localize a noise problem to the customer's premises wiring.
