This read-only value reports the port's actual current forwarding state under Spanning Tree: disabled, learning, forwarding, blocking, unknown, or nonSTP. An admin treats an unexpected blocking state as a signal that STP has detected a redundant or looped path and is deliberately keeping that link idle to prevent a storm. For example, an access port stuck at blocking(4) instead of forwarding(3) tells the admin STP found a preferred path elsewhere in the topology and is holding this link in reserve rather than that this port has a hardware fault.
