This read-write setting selects which category of inbound traffic the port's rate limiter actually inspects: all traffic, broadcast plus multicast plus flooded unicast, broadcast plus multicast only, or broadcast alone. An admin uses it to narrow storm-control enforcement to just the traffic types that tend to cause storms, without throttling legitimate unicast flows. For example, setting it to broadcastOnly(4) on a port feeding a large flat VLAN stops broadcast storms from a misbehaving NIC while leaving normal multicast video streams untouched.
