What is vmsTotalIdle?
This is the total clock ticks all CPUs combined have spent executing the NULL process since the system was booted, i.e., aggregate idle capacity across the machine. An administrator uses this system-wide idle figure alongside the CPU count to compute overall system utilization. For example, dividing vmsTotalIdle by elapsed uptime and CPU count gives the administrator a straightforward system-wide idle percentage for capacity planning.
