It gives the admin a snapshot, refreshed on the group's own gathering schedule, of how much immediately-available memory the system has at each check. For example, if this value trends toward zero across successive polling intervals, the admin should expect the write and fault counters in the same statistics group to rise correspondingly as the system compensates.
