This counter reports how many pages awaiting write-back to disk currently sit on the modified-page list. A growing backlog here means the system is accumulating dirty pages faster than it's writing them out, which can eventually force synchronous writes that stall processes. For example, if this count climbs steadily during a heavy write workload without leveling off, the admin may need to tune the modified-page writer threshold to flush pages sooner.
