This is a count of attempts made against the extent cache, i.e., all lookups for file extent information whether or not they were served from cache. An administrator pairs this with vmsFileExtentHit to compute the hit ratio for disk allocation metadata lookups. For example, a rising extent attempt count during heavy database growth activity without a corresponding rise in hits would suggest extent cache thrashing.
