This is a count of attempts made against the directory data cache, i.e., all directory content lookups whether satisfied from cache or not. An administrator uses this value paired with vmsFileDirDataHit to compute the effective hit ratio for directory content caching. For example, a sudden surge in vmsFileDirDataAttempt without a matching rise in hits would point to directory scanning activity, such as a backup job, that is bypassing the cache.
