This counter counts collisions the Ethernet controller saw after the standard 51.2-microsecond slot time had already elapsed, i.e. late collisions on the repeater's own transmit path. Because late collisions are not supposed to happen on a correctly configured Ethernet, a nonzero value strongly suggests a cabling run that exceeds distance limits or a duplex mismatch on the repeater's uplink. An admin seeing this counter increase would measure cable length and check duplex settings on the switch port the IN3000 connects to.
