An admin adjusts this to trade off packetization delay against per-packet overhead: smaller payloads reduce delay but increase overhead, larger payloads do the opposite. For example, increasing this value on a peer carrying non-interactive traffic would reduce the number of packets sent per second at the cost of slightly higher latency.
