This read-write value both reports and controls whether a chassis operates as a standalone switch or as part of the virtual switch architecture, and can only be set to a mode the chassis's capability bits actually support. An admin cares because changing this value is the actual mechanism for converting a chassis between standalone and virtual switch operation, and the MIB warns the action does more than just flip the mode, to avoid leaving the switch in an ambiguous state. For example, setting this to a virtual-switch value on a chassis whose capability field doesn't include that bit would be rejected rather than silently accepted.
