virtualNwIfOperStatusCause

Module: CISCO-VIRTUAL-NW-IF-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-VIRTUAL-NW-IF-MIB::virtualNwIfOperStatusCause

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.290.1.1.1.1.5

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: INTEGER

Description: The cause of current operational state of the interface. 'none(1)' - no failure. 'adminDown(2)' - 'ifAdminStatus' is down(2). 'vsanNotOperational(3) - VSAN not operational. 'noFcid(4)' - failed to get an FCID. 'kernelConfFailure(5)' - failed to configure the network device. The current operational state of the interface is shown by the 'ifOperStatus' defined in rfc2863. This object will show 'none(1)' for all the 'ifOperStatus' values except for 'down(2)'. It will show one of the values defined above if 'ifOperStatus' is 'down(2)'.

What is virtualNwIfOperStatusCause?

This reports the specific reason behind a virtual interface's current operational state, including no failure, administratively down, the VSAN not being operational, failure to obtain an FC-ID, or a kernel configuration failure. An admin cares because it goes beyond simple up or down status to explain exactly why the interface isn't operational, directing troubleshooting to the right layer. For example, a virtual interface reporting noFcid(4) tells the admin the problem is a failed FC-ID assignment rather than an administrative shutdown or VSAN issue.

Start monitoring Cisco MDS storage switches / Nexus virtualized switching platforms with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Create custom SNMP monitor using the CISCO-VIRTUAL-NW-IF-MIB::virtualNwIfOperStatusCause OID value, configure state conditions and alerts, and monitor any Cisco MDS storage switches / Nexus virtualized switching platforms from a single console.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Select a Cisco MDS storage switches / Nexus virtualized switching platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type virtualNwIfOperStatusCause into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The cause of current operational state of the interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'none', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
