virtualNwIfIndex

Module: CISCO-VIRTUAL-NW-IF-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-VIRTUAL-NW-IF-MIB::virtualNwIfIndex

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.290.1.1.1.1.3

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: InterfaceIndex

Access: read-only

Description: The ifIndex of this interface. This value is dynamically assigned by the agent. It is valid whenever the value of the corresponding virtualNwIfRowStatus is 'active'. The ifType of interface of type vsan(1) will be 'fibreChannel(56)' and of type 'vlan(2)' would be 'ethernetCsmacd(6)'.

What is virtualNwIfIndex?

This reports the ifIndex dynamically assigned by the agent to a virtual network interface, valid whenever the row's status is active, with its ifType reflecting the underlying interface type: fibreChannel(56) for a VSAN or ethernetCsmacd(6) for a VLAN. An admin cares because it's the bridge between this virtual-interface-specific table and the standard interface table, confirming which physical media type the virtual interface maps to. For example, a virtual network interface of VSAN type would show up in the standard interface table with ifType fibreChannel(56), letting standard interface tools correctly interpret it.
