An admin would enable this on ports connecting to end stations or NICs known to support ETR, since disabling it on ETR-capable hardware leaves ring bandwidth unused unnecessarily. Mismatched ETR settings between the port and an attached device can also cause subtle throughput problems worth checking during a performance investigation.
