This is the live topology-size indicator for the ring: a sudden drop in node count, without this interface itself going down, means one or more other nodes on the ring have dropped off, which on a ring topology can also mean the ring has split or a break has occurred elsewhere. srpNodesOnTheRing dropping from 8 to 5 while this interface remains up indicates three other nodes elsewhere on the ring have become unreachable, likely due to a fiber cut or node failure at another point on the ring.
