cospfShamLinkRetransInterval

Module: CISCO-OSPF-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-OSPF-MIB::cospfShamLinkRetransInterval

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.99.6.1.4

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: UpToMaxAge

Access: read-only

Description: The number of seconds between link-state advertisement retransmissions, for adjacencies belonging to this link. This value is also used when retransmitting database description and link-state request packets. This value should be well over the expected round trip time.

What is cospfShamLinkRetransInterval?

This object reports how many seconds a router waits before retransmitting an unacknowledged link-state advertisement to its neighbor across an OSPF sham link, a virtual adjacency configured over an MPLS VPN backbone to preserve correct OSPF behavior between sites that are actually connected via the customer's own backdoor link. It matters because setting this too low wastes bandwidth on unnecessary retransmissions over what might be an expensive or congested VPN path, while setting it too high slows convergence if a genuine packet loss occurs. The description notes it should be well over the expected round-trip time of that path, so an admin configuring a sham link over a high-latency satellite-backed VPN connection would need a noticeably longer value here than for a low-latency terrestrial link.
