cospfRFC1583Compatibility

Module: CISCO-OSPF-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-OSPF-MIB::cospfRFC1583Compatibility

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.99.1.1

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: TruthValue

Access: read-only

Description: Indicates metrics used to choose among multiple AS- external-LSAs. When cospfRFC1583Compatibility is set to enabled, only cost will be used when choosing among multiple AS-external-LSAs advertising the same destination. When cospfRFC1583Compatibility is set to disabled, preference will be driven first by type of path using cost only to break ties.

What is cospfRFC1583Compatibility?

This object reports whether OSPF is running in RFC 1583-compatible mode, which changes how the router breaks ties when multiple AS-external LSAs advertise the same destination: compatible mode uses cost alone, while the newer behavior prefers path type first and only uses cost as a tiebreaker. It matters because a mismatch in this setting between routers in the same OSPF domain is a classic, hard-to-spot cause of inconsistent external route selection and even routing loops across an autonomous system. An admin seeing two routers pick different best paths to the same external destination should check whether this setting differs between them before looking anywhere else.
