cVrrpStatisticsInvldTypePktsRcvd

Module: CISCO-IETF-VRRP-MIB

OID (symbolic): CISCO-IETF-VRRP-MIB::cVrrpStatisticsInvldTypePktsRcvd

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.10.999.2.5.1.7

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter32

Access: read-only

Description: The number of VRRP packets received by the virtual router with an invalid value in the 'type' field.

Discontinuities in the value of this counter can occur at re-initialization of the management system, and at other times as indicated by the value of the corresponding instance of cVrrpStatisticsDiscontinuityTime.

What is cVrrpStatisticsInvldTypePktsRcvd?

This counts VRRP packets received with an invalid value in the packet's 'type' field, which per the VRRP protocol should only ever be the Advertisement type, so any other value indicates either a malformed packet, a corrupted transmission, or possibly a crafted/malicious packet. It's a lower-level protocol-integrity counter than the version or VRID error counters, catching cases where the packet claims a valid VRRP version and VRID but still fails basic protocol structure validation. A rising count here alongside otherwise-normal VRRP operation is worth flagging to a security team as a potential probing or fuzzing attempt against the VRRP implementation.
