This is the version number of the IS-IS protocol that is implemented. In practice virtually every deployed IS-IS implementation reports one(1) since there has only ever been one standardized version of the protocol, so this object mainly serves as a compatibility sanity-check rather than something an admin would tune. For example, an inventory script polling this across a fleet of routers would expect one(1) everywhere, and a router unexpectedly reporting unknown(0) would flag a broken or non-compliant IS-IS stack worth investigating.
