It declares the circuit's network topology model -- broadcast (LAN with DIS election) versus point-to-point (direct link, no DIS needed) among the other variants -- and mismatching this against the actual interface causes IS-IS to run the wrong adjacency and flooding behavior for that medium. For example, declaring a genuinely point-to-point Ethernet sub-interface as broadcast(1) instead of ptToPt(2) would cause the router to needlessly run DIS election logic on a link that has only one possible neighbor.
