This selects which built-in test or loopback mode the modem is running, from normal traffic-carrying operation through IF, digital, IO, and RF loopbacks or continuous-wave and alternating-pattern transmit tests. Because any mode other than normalMode(0) takes the unit out of live service and routes or generates test traffic instead, this is a field an admin must always verify is back at 0 after maintenance, or the link will silently stay in a test state. Setting this to rfLoopback(4) routes the transmit signal back into the receiver at RF to verify the RF chain end-to-end, but the unit cannot pass real traffic until it is set back to normalMode(0).
