This counter, a subset of cdd564TotalPacketsToEthernet, tracks specifically how many unicast IP packets have been routed out to the Ethernet interface. Because unicast traffic represents point-to-point sessions rather than broadcast/multicast overhead, a sudden drop in this counter's rate while the overall total stays level suggests multicast or broadcast traffic is crowding out normal unicast flows to attached hosts. On a lightly loaded site this counter might increment by only a few hundred packets per minute, so a jump to tens of thousands per minute would flag an unusual unicast traffic spike worth investigating.
