This is the first-stage CRC check -- performed before 3xDES decryption and payload decompression -- and the MIB states it indicates errors due to the satellite link only. Because this stage is explicitly attributed to link-only errors, this is the cleanest indicator of raw RF path quality among the Rx error counters, uncontaminated by decryption or decompression issues that would instead show up in the second-stage CRC counter. A steadily rising count here that tracks a falling Eb/No confirms the satellite RF path itself is degrading, as opposed to a downstream processing issue.
