This read-write object selects the receive Forward Error Correction type, with valid values of uncoded(0) or turbo(6). FEC type has a direct, first-order effect on how much signal degradation the link can tolerate before losing lock -- turbo coding lets the demodulator recover a valid signal at a much lower Eb/No than uncoded reception, at the cost of requiring the far-end transmitter to be configured to match. If a link is experiencing marginal Eb/No during rain fade, switching this from uncoded(0) to turbo(6), with a matching change at the transmit end, can restore a reliable lock at the same RF power by trading some effective data rate for stronger error correction.
