An admin managing a unit exposed on a shared or semi-public satellite backhaul link might disable this specifically to reduce its visibility to ping-based network scanning, accepting the tradeoff of losing a simple reachability test from the NOC. For example, setting this to disabled(0) means a routine ping sweep across the network won't even show this unit as present, though SNMP and other management access remain unaffected.
