This counter tallies the total number of packets received that carry IP Options set in the IP header, such as source routing or record route options. IP Options are rarely used in normal traffic and are sometimes associated with network reconnaissance tools or misbehaving legacy stacks, so a nonzero and climbing value here -- especially on a link that should be carrying only routine application data -- is a useful early signal of unusual or potentially probing traffic reaching the router. On a typical satellite data link this counter might sit at zero indefinitely; seeing it suddenly register a few dozen packets after a new host is added to the LAN would prompt an admin to identify which device is generating IP-Option-tagged packets and why.
