This counts broadcast frames the port has received without errors, giving a running tally of broadcast traffic volume specific to that port's segment. An admin tracks this to detect broadcast storms -- a runaway rate of increase here relative to other ports on the same switch is a classic symptom of a loop or a misbehaving device flooding ARP or similar broadcasts. A port whose broadcast count is climbing by thousands per second while its neighbors stay flat is a strong candidate for isolation during troubleshooting.
