Category: VPN and Security, Vendor: Aventail

Description: Monitors individual service component health and availability within Aventail SSL VPN appliances.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AVENTAIL-SERVICE-HEALTH-MIB?

AVENTAIL-SERVICE-HEALTH-MIB is a private enterprise module for Aventail SSL VPN appliances that reports the health and availability of individual internal service components running on the appliance. Its data centers on a service status table listing each named service, a description, and its current operational state. This is explicitly a software/process health monitoring MIB -- it is used to confirm that critical VPN appliance services (such as authentication, proxy, or session management daemons) are actually running, letting an admin detect a crashed or degraded service before it causes an outage for end users. Being an Aventail-specific enterprise MIB, it has no notable dependency on external standard MIBs beyond the usual SNMP framework. It is deployed on Aventail (later SonicWALL/Dell) SSL VPN gateway appliances in enterprise remote-access environments. Engineers can download the AVENTAIL-SERVICE-HEALTH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AVENTAIL-SERVICE-HEALTH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Aventail SSL VPN appliances

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll serviceTable/serviceEntry, reading serviceId and serviceDescription to identify each internal VPN service and serviceState to check whether it is running, stopped, or in an error condition. A service transitioning out of its normal running state (visible via serviceState) would indicate an internal component failure requiring investigation or a service restart. serviceTableRowStatus would reflect whether a given service row is currently active in the table.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-service operational state
  • service identifier and description
  • service table row status

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using serviceState OID:

Select an Aventail SSL VPN appliance (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type serviceState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This oid conveys service state as \ active(0), notInService(2), or crashed(6). On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
