Organization: Sun Microsystems Inc.

Last Updated: 2006-09-20

Category: SNMP Framework

Description: Provides extended SNMP agent statistics for MIB-II managed objects including request counts and error tracking.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AGENT-STATS-MIB2?

This MIB module provides extended statistics about the health and activity of the SNMP agent process itself running on a host, rather than about the monitored device's network interfaces. It exposes counters such as command/request totals and rates, and tracks agent-internal process information including process ID, process name, state, and owning user ID, consistent with Sun/SunSymon-style agent monitoring. This is a software/process health MIB: administrators use it to confirm the SNMP agent itself is alive and responsive, track its request-handling rate and load, and correlate agent process state/PID with system process monitoring to detect a hung or restarted agent. As a vendor-specific extension associated with SunSymon-style tooling, it complements the standard SNMPv2-MIB agent counters by adding richer agent-internal detail. It is typically deployed on Unix/Solaris hosts running SNMP agents, used to monitor the health of the monitoring infrastructure itself. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the AGENT-STATS-MIB2 file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AGENT-STATS-MIB2. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Unix/Solaris host running an SNMP agent
  • vendor-neutral, host-based SNMP agent monitoring MIB

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling cmdTotal and cmdRate would track how many SNMP requests the agent has processed and its current request rate, while pid, state, and uid for the agent process confirm it is running under the expected user and is in a healthy state. A cmdRate that drops to zero while pid remains unchanged, or a state showing something other than running, would indicate the agent has stalled or hung despite the process still existing.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP command/request totals
  • SNMP command rate
  • agent process ID and state
  • agent process owning user
  • transaction totals and rate

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cmdTotal OID:

Select an Unix/Solaris hosts running an SNMP agent as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cmdTotal into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of commands that have been executed. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
