snmpTrapAddress

Module: SNMP-COMMUNITY-MIB

OID (symbolic): SNMP-COMMUNITY-MIB::snmpTrapAddress

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.6.3.18.1.3

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: IpAddress

Access: accessible-for-notify

Description: The value of the agent-addr field of a Trap PDU which is forwarded by a proxy forwarder application using an SNMP version other than SNMPv1. The value of this object SHOULD contain the value of the agent-addr field from the original Trap PDU as generated by an SNMPv1 agent.

What is snmpTrapAddress?

This object carries the agent-addr field copied from an original SNMPv1 Trap PDU that is being forwarded by a proxy application using a newer SNMP version. It exists so that when a proxy translates and relays a v1 trap, downstream managers can still see which device actually originated the trap rather than the proxy's own address. For example, if a remote agent at 10.1.1.5 sends an SNMPv1 trap that a proxy converts to SNMPv2c, this object preserves 10.1.1.5 in the forwarded notification.
