Organization: Brocade Communications Systems, Inc.,

Last Updated: 2013-06-05

Category: Brocade

Description: Monitors Brocade switch resource utilization including memory, CPU, and buffer pool statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RESOURCE-MIB?

RESOURCE-MIB is a Brocade Communications Systems enterprise MIB (copyright 1996-2003) that reports system-level resource information for Brocade Fibre Channel switch platforms. It focuses on system resource utilization data such as memory consumption, CPU load, and buffer pool statistics rather than interface or configuration data. This is squarely a hardware/software health-monitoring MIB: it lets an administrator track CPU load and memory usage trends on the switch's control processor, along with buffer pool exhaustion that can precede packet drops or fabric instability, functioning much like a lightweight system-vitals module for the switch's embedded OS. As a Brocade proprietary MIB it is typically polled alongside standard SNMPv2-MIB system group objects and Brocade's other Fibre Channel-specific MIBs rather than replacing them. It is deployed on Brocade SAN (storage area network) Fibre Channel switches and directors in enterprise data centers to keep tabs on switch control-plane health. Engineers can download the RESOURCE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RESOURCE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade Fibre Channel SAN switches/directors

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were provided for this module, so specific object names cannot be cited; based on the short description and stated purpose, an administrator would be expected to poll CPU utilization, free/used memory counters, and buffer pool occupancy objects to catch a switch's control processor becoming resource-starved, which often precedes slow fabric services or SNMP timeouts, but the exact object identifiers are not confirmed from the available source.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPU utilization
  • memory utilization
  • buffer pool statistics
