rsSnmpAuthFailIdReason

Module: REDSTONE-SNMP-MIB

OID (symbolic): REDSTONE-SNMP-MIB::rsSnmpAuthFailIdReason

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.2773.2.16.1.4.4

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: INTEGER

Access: accessible-for-notify

Description: The reason a received SNMP request failed authentication:

other Unspecified reason.

badCommunityName The community is not recognized.

badCommunityUse The community does not have privilege for the SNMP request type (e.g. SET request with a community having read-only privilege).

hostDenied The host IP address was denied by the community's associated access list.

What is rsSnmpAuthFailIdReason?

This notification-only value, included in the standard SNMPv2 authenticationFailure trap, reports why the request failed: other(0), badCommunityName(1) meaning the community wasn't recognized, badCommmunityUse(2) meaning the community lacked privilege for that request type (e.g. a SET from a read-only community), or hostDenied(3) meaning the source IP was denied by the community's access list. An admin uses this to immediately distinguish an unrecognized-credential problem from a privilege-mismatch or access-list-denial problem without further digging. For example, rsSnmpAuthFailIdReason=badCommmunityUse(2) tells the admin the community name itself was valid but was used to attempt an operation, like a SET, beyond that community's configured privilege level.
