Admins pick trap-and-shutdown for critical access ports where a storm likely indicates a network loop or misbehaving device that should be isolated immediately, versus just trap on ports where they want visibility without automatic disruption. For example, setting this to shutdown(3) on an access port would automatically disable that port the moment a broadcast storm exceeds the configured rate, requiring manual re-enabling.
