This configures which path-cost standard the bridge uses when auto-deriving default port costs from link speed: legacy (a private standard), dot1d-1998 (IEEE 802.1d-1998), or dot1t (IEEE 802.1t). An admin sets this to dot1t on higher-speed links so default path costs reflect the newer standard's wider cost range instead of the older 802.1d values.
