Description: Since SNMP traps are transported using UDP, there is a possibility for the trap to be lost in transit. To allow the NMS the ability to detect this possibility, all traps will include a trap sequence number as part of its variable binding list. The trap sequence number may be reset each time the system reboots and will increment for each trap sent from the device. When a missing trap sequence number is detected the NMS may be able to refresh its state of the switch to determine what event it may have missed.
What is dellTrapSeqNum?
This value is a sequence number attached to every trap the device sends, incrementing with each trap and resetting when the device reboots, used to help a management station detect if any traps were lost in transit since SNMP traps travel over unreliable UDP. An admin's monitoring system compares consecutive sequence numbers from the same device to notice gaps, which indicate a trap didn't arrive and the NMS may need to poll the device directly to catch up on its current state. For example, receiving trap sequence numbers 10 and then 13 would tell the monitoring system it likely missed traps 11 and 12 and should check the device's status directly.
