An administrator enables this so a detected trace mismatch is propagated as a clear, recognizable alarm condition to downstream equipment instead of silently passing through mismatched trace data. For example, enabling this on 10G WAN SONET means that once the receive trace stops matching what was expected, downstream nodes see AIS and raise their own alarms rather than continuing to process a signal from an unverified source.
